Water Bottles Tweaked into Bombs Found at School

Several homemade explosive devices were found on the sports field of a Fairfax middle school over the weekend.

Fairfax police said three pressurized plastic water bottles and some small chemical containers were found on Lefty Gomez Field at White Hill Middle School around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

There were also remnants of a fourth, partially ruptured bottle, Sgt. Stuart Baker said.

The Ross Valley Fire Department and the UC Berkeley bomb squad responded to deal with the unexploded devices, Baker said.

The bottles were de-pressurized using shot pellets, and the Ross Valley School District responded for cleanup, Baker said.

For security reasons, police are not describing the bottles or their contents, Baker said.

"However, the size and location of the devices indicate they were designed primarily for noise rather than destruction, and there is no evidence that the neighboring residents were ever placed at risk," Baker said.
         
The middle school, located at 101 Glen Drive, closed Friday for Spring Break until April 16.
