Fairfax Footbridge to Finally Open

Wiped out in the flood, the bridge behind the Fairfax tennis courts is set to open next week.

After five years, the footbridge at the back of the Fairfax Women's Club off of Park Road behind the tennis courts that connects to the back of the baseball diamond is finally ready to re-open.

The pedestrian bridge was wiped out during the New Year's Eve floods of 2005 when the banks of the creek collapsed because of erosion during the heavy rains.

The town has spent the last five years working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to get the plans approved in order to get funding for the rebuilding of the bridge. The new pedestrian bridge cost approximately $200,000 said Town Manager Michael Rock and will allow pedestrians to cross to the ball field and connect to Sir Francis Drake. It will also prevent people from crossing directly through the creek -- an environmental and safety hazard.

The bridge, which has become something of a pet issue for local residents, is in the final stages of construction and is expected to be completed and officially open for use by the middle of next week.
