Op-Ed: Does the Town Want a Parking Lot on Red Hill?

Resident Annie Bates-Winship wants to make sure residents know that a proposed parking lot on Red Hill goes to a vote on March 27 to rezone the land from open space to limited commercial.

The owner of the San Anselmo Auto Body/Jeep repair building and surrounding land wants to build a parking lot on Red Hill by the corner of Spaulding St. and Luna Lane.

The official wording for the project is:

"Application for a private parking lot at Spaulding Street and Luna Lane – This application requests a General Plan Amendment and rezoning to allow a private parking lot on the currently undeveloped lot. Approval of the application would facilitate development of the parking lot for the exclusive use of the residents and businesses at 112 Spaulding Street and 640 Sir Francis Drake Blvd."

The project has already been approved by the San Anselmo Planning Commission, and goes before the town council on March 27 for a vote. They will be rezoning the land from open space to Limited Commercial.

I live on Luna Lane and do not want the lot to be built for many reasons, but foremost is the potentially bad idea of digging up land at the foot of Red Hill, and perhaps creating another eyesore, such as the failed building at 790 Sir Francis Drake Blvd.

The neighbors who live nearby are all opposed to the parking lot, so our community is not being served by this project.

I am writing this article because we just want the rest of the residents of San Anselmo to know about this proposed parking lot that will be by the HUB, before it is approved, and it is too late to have a say in the matter.

This item was on the agenda for the March 13 meeting, but it was postponed to the March 27 meeting. Since I now had the opportunity, I wanted to put the word out to the town residents to create awareness of this parking lot that, if approved, will be taking over open space.

So, if you oppose it, or just want to know more about it, please come to the next town council meeting on Tuesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. It is important for us to be heard.
