Plenty of Potholes in San Anselmo and Fairfax

Fairfax scores average for road maintenance, while San Anselmo is "at-risk."

San Anselmo and Fairfax received some of the worst grades among Marin County municipalities recently when the Metropolitan Transportation Commission released its report on the state of Bay Area roads.

The new report (attached) was based on analysis of pavement conditions conducted by the individual jurisdictions. It listed the pavement condition index (listed as PCI on the graphic below) for all nine counties and 101 cities in the Bay Area.

San Anselmo ranked third from the bottom with a score of 55 out of 100 (based on past averages), while Fairfax was in the middle of the Marin cities with a score of 69. Both scores hover near the Bay Area average of 66 and the 60-point threshold at which “deterioration accelerates rapidly and the need for major rehabilitation becomes much more likely,” according to the report.

The MTC has established a 75-point score as a target for roadway quality in the long-range Transportation 2035 Plan it adopted in 2009.

Belvedere ranked No. 1 in Marin at 84 and San Rafael was No. 2 75. Unincorporated Marin County came in at 52 and Larkspur, the only Marin town in the “poor” category, was at 45.

San Anselmo's road quality has been steadily decreasing in recent years, according to the report. The city scored a PCI of 59 in 2006, a 58 in 2007 and a 57 in 2009.

Fairfax has stayed steady, maintaining 69 or 70 PCI throughout the past four years.
