Supervisor Hal Brown Completes Treatment for Cancer

Although Brown describes the treatment as successful, over the next two or three months, he will determine whether or not to step down from his role as the District 2 supervisor.

Supervisor Hal Brown announced today that he has completed treatment for cancer and looks forward to returning to work.

Brown first told the public in January 2011 that he would be missing board of supervisors meetings for treatment of a then unnamed illness.

“My intent has always been to beat this thing and get back to work; and that hasn’t changed,” said Brown in a press release.  Brown was diagnosed with cancer last December.

“Though successful, the treatments have been grueling,” acknowledged Brown. “If I have not regained enough strength in the next two or three months to return full time, I will have to consider stepping down.”

Brown said that although he has been unable to attend meetings during his treatment, he has continued to confer regularly with top county staff and his colleagues, and meets with his own staff daily to review issues and constituent needs.

This is Brown’s 29th year in office. He was appointed to the seat in 1983 by then first time governor, Jerry Brown, and has gone on to re-election seven times since.

Brown said in a press statement that he has been heartened by the hundreds of calls, cards and emails offering support during his illness. “I have truly been touched by the outpouring of concern and well-wishes. I am reminded daily of how lucky I am to be part of this incredible community.”
