1.  Vacancies to be filled on Access Appeals Board, Kentfield & Tamalpais planning advisory boards

The Board of Supervisors will consider making appointments for vacancies on several County boards. The Access Appeals Board resolves disputes related to accessibility requirements imposed under building code or health and safety regulations. It currently has one vacancy for a public member and received one application from Ron Boyles of San Rafael, a licensed real estate broker, former contractor, and attorney. The Kentfield Planning Advisory Board, which reviews and comments on various permit applications and other land use matters in the Kentfield area, also has one vacancy, and received one application – from Mary Sylla of Kentfield, who is an attorney and public health advocate. Finally, the board will consider making an appointment for two vacancies on the Tamalpais Design Review Board. This board reviews and comments on various land use and zoning applications in the Tamalpais planning area. Incumbents James Bramell and April Post, both of Mill Valley, have applied. Bramell is a retired environmental science teacher for the San Francisco School District, and Post is a landscape designer.

2.  March 2012 to be “Tsunami Awareness” Month

Are you prepared if there is a tsunami? Marin’s coastline, its proximity to other coastal areas with offshore earthquake faults, and its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” make it vulnerable to tsunamis, which are caused by underwater earthquakes and landslides and can occur anytime with little warning. A resolution is scheduled proclaiming March 2012 as “Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness Month.” To get information about how to prepare for a tsunami, the public can go to the California Geological Survey’s website. In May, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) will also be conducting a practice exercise simulating a tsunami event to ensure staff from the county and various other public agencies throughout Marin are prepared for such an event.

3. State Budget Impacts on Child Care in Marin to be Presented

Like many other programs and services throughout the State of California, childcare opportunities have not been immune from the effects of budget cuts at the state level. The Board of Supervisors will hear a presentation from the Marin Child Care Council (MC3) regarding the impacts those cuts have had on childcare in Marin.

4. $118,000 Awarded to County Public Works Dept for Bicycle & Pedestrian Pathway Maintenance

Just in time for spring weather, the Board of Supervisors is being asked to accept Transportation Development Act (TDA) grant funding for resurfacing some of the county’s bicycle and pedestrian pathways. The board will be considering a staff recommendation to accept funding for proposed multi-use pathway paving that will take place along parts of the Mill Valley-Sausalito path from Gate 6 Road to Vasco Court, portions of the Corte Madera Creek path, and Bacich School pathway. The Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) approved the funding in accordance with TDA requirements, which does not affect the County’s General Fund.
