Fairfax Town Council to Consider Extending Smart Meter Moratorium

Violations of moratorium terms, continued uncertainty about health issues point to extended delay

In a special Adjournment Session of the Fairfax Town Council, a potentially controversial issue left over from the May 2 council meeting will be taken up this Wednesday, May 16 - a proposal to extend the .

On August 4, 2010, the Town Council adopted an urgency ordinance prohibiting for a one year period the installation of the so-called  “SmartMeter” wireless energy meters in or on any living quarters or business in Fairfax, or equipment related to them.

Butlf, according to Ordinance 765 to be introduced at the Wednesday meeting, "PG&E has already installed antennae and transmission equipment to support the SmartMeter system at four sites within the public rights of way in the Town without obtaining permits from the Town…"

Because of this and continuing disagreements between the Town and PG&E over  "the privacy, health and economic interests that were raised by numerous Fairfax residents in their public comments" and several other issues, " the Town is seeking another 12-month moratorium on SmartMeter implementation.

The meeting will be called to order at 6:30 p.m. at the, then adjourn into closed session for approximately half an hour. Public comment will follow the 7 p.m. roll call, announcement of the closed session action and other matters, and is expected to get under way at about 7:15 pm.

The introduction and reading of Ordinance 765 is expected as the final order of business. Next meeting of the Town Council is scheduled for May 30.
