Hey, Wait a Minute, That's My Town Your Talking About!

Overheard: “Used clothing stores and nail salons, that’s all down town San Anselmo has.” Hey, wait a minute!

“Used clothing stores and nail salons, that’s all down town San Anselmo has.”

That’s what I just over heard a cyclist riding down San Anselmo Avenue tell his riding companion.

Hey, wait a minute!  That's my town you're talking about.

Clearly he has no idea that we have 7 beautiful boutiques filled with new clothing of original and absolutely fantastic style.  We have a lovely lingerie shop that has endured for over 25 years along with an amazing children's clothing boutique that’s incredible, too!

Don’t forget the book shop, the beautiful Italian pottery shop and Delectables aolng with three great jewelers, and Shadow’s for wedding and dresses.

Need a gift?  Can’t go wrong at Toss, Rock-Paper-Flower, The Great Acorn, The Pink Flamingo, Felice and Fig Garden.

Need a new swim suit?  Won’t find better or more beautiful at the new bathing suit shop.

We have two eclectic coffee shops (soon to be three!) that serve up great coffee and lovely meals, two great bakeries and one can’t forget the gelato shop!  9 sensational restaurants from basic diner fair to fabulous French cuisine with sushi in between.

There’s a paper stationary store, new and wholesale designer eye ware at Focus, and one can’t forget the Modern I or Dogville or the two home décor stores, too.

Want a new camera or an expert who knows about your old one and can take care of all your photography needs?  Yea, we have that.

Want a facial?  How about Eden Day Spa?  Need some acupuncture?  We have a place for that, too!  Pilates?  Yup, we have two of those.  Feel like taking a spinning class?  No problem.

How about supporting the amazing artists with special needs at Artist’s Within and getting an original piece of art or hand woven napkins, place mats or table cloths?  Or the Humane Society's Thrift Store or the new and wonderful Georgi & Willow that supports Good Will?

We must also remember the three beauty salons that are always busy making us beautiful and a running store that will take you places.

So, when you hear that we have nothing but nail salons (there only 4 on my count) and used clothing stores (3 on my count again) which sells nothing but beautiful hand-picked items and actually serves our community and helps the environment please remember that downtown San Anselmo offers so very much more.  Also remember that I am only talking about the area by the Post Office down to the Fire House on or just off of San Anselmo Avenue.  I didn’t even cover all of the businesses and I still came up with over 50.

And, we really should all give thanks to Mr. George Lucas because we are going to have an absolutely fantastic place to rest our wary bones from all the things to see, do, look at and purchase with the new park going in on the other side of Town Hall and the library.

One last point, please.  Those nail salons?  They are rarely without clients in those massage chairs soaking their feet and the hard working nail technicians are sending their children to Stanford and Yale.

Ha! Well, I guess you have to consider the source. What would a passing cyclist be looking for anyway? The coffee shops and yogurt stores are a draw, but aside from maybe one or two higher profile restaurants (like LoCoco's) not much sticks out as you're pedaling through on San Anselmo Ave. Mostly when I ride through, I've got to watch out for traffic and pedestrians in the crosswalks. It may not be reality for locals, but on a casual observation there's much more reason to stop in Fairfax if you're on 2 wheels.
Sorry Sarah, I doubt there's much that can be done to increase the profile of San Anselmo amongst the through cycling community, except maybe for forcing them to stop at all the stop signs and lights. :)

We do have great shops and restaurants in San Anselmo, including some good stops for cyclists. I've often felt, though, that we could do more for visiting cyclists, such as; road and trail signs, a rest stop/open space for bicycle repair, hydration station and maybe some food carts from local eateries. How about some town sponsored cycling events? How about some guided rides for those new to Marin riding?

I went to the Smashburger in Novato & have to say that it was a disappointing experience. TheRead More burger was very mediocore & the onion rings were awful-very greasy. The staff were not friendly & operated with a "Bambi in the headlights" look about them. I do wish Smasburger luck in their locations. However, from my perspective there is a good deal of work that still needs to be done with the food, staff & service. At this time, "In & Out" Burger is a "hand's down favorite...thanks
