Drake students pass exit exam in high numbers

Ninety-three percent of Drake tenth graders pass the graduation requirement on the first try.

Drake students passed the California High School Exit Exam in outstanding numbers, according to the results released today.

Students are first given the opportunity to pass the exit exam – a graduation requirement consisting of a test in math and one in English – in the 10th grade. Students who don't pass both sections on the first try are given two more chances in 11th grade and between three and five more chances to take the test in 12th grade.

State-wide, 80.6 percent of 10th graders passed the English portion and 80.7 percent passed the math section. By the time they graduated this year, 94.5 percent of California students passed both parts of the exit exam.

At Drake High School, those numbers were much higher.

By comparison, 98 percent of Drake 10th graders passed the English portion and 93 percent of Drake 10th graders passed the math portion. These results are similar to the Tamalpais Unified District as a whole. But, at the county level, only 88 percent of 10th graders passed the English portion and only 87 percent of 10th graders passed the math portion.

In order to pass, students must score a 55 percent on a math test that covers material through eighth grade state standards. And they must score a 60 percent on the English test, which covers material through the 10th grade.

The exit exam was implemented in 1999, but 2006 was the first year that students were required to pass it in order to receive a high school diploma.
