High School Kids Hike for the Homeless

Fifty Drake students head to the top of Mt. Baldy to raise money.

Faced with the question of what a couple students could do to help combat homelessness in the county, two sophomores decided to act -- specifically, to hike.

Sophomores Meghan Kelly and Camden Dowd recruited 50 students, teachers, and staff to hike up Mt. Baldy on Sunday afternoon in a Hike for the Homeless that raised $2,500.

The money raised by the students participating in the hike will go to Homeward Bound of Marin, which operates shelters and support services for the homessless, including job training and mental health services.

"Seeing everyone come together to raise money for families struggling during these touch economic times was inspiring," said Meghan.

With such a large group gathered for the hike from up to the top of Baldy, part of the idea was to raise awareness of an often-overlooked issue in the community.

"I loved and enjoyed hiking together very much. The fact that we were doing something great made it more fun," said Camden.

"The event exceeded our expectations and was a huge success," said Homeward Bound Volunteer Coordinator Dominique Legnitto.
