Playoff Update: Drake Tops MCALs

Boys water polo, cross-country, football and girls volleyball still have play-off games. Add your own photos of the MCAL and NCS games!

As the Pirates wrap up the Marin County Athletic League and North Coast Section play-off season, we want to recognize the teams for all their hard work. Here's how our Drake Pirates performed this year.

Football:

Last weekend, the Drake football team topped Terra Linda 37-21 to help ensure a spot for the Pirates in the North Coast Section play-offs.

The team, which is 3-2 in MCAL play, has its final game of the MCAL season against San Marin this Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at San Marin. The Pirates have to wait until the end of the weekend, though, to find out their seeding and potential opponents for NCS play.

Girls Volleyball:

After beating Justin-Siena in three games (25-16, 25-12, 25-22), Drake lost to the second-seeded Redwood in the MCAL semi-final match. The Giants topped the Pirates in three games (25-22, 25-19, 25-18).

Drake then advanced to the North Coast Section play-offs with an eight-seed. Last night, Nov. 9, they beat Acalanes in three matches at Drake (25-23, 25-15, 26-24).

The girls play top-seeded Bishop O'Dowd at Bishop O'Dowd at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 12.

Girls Water Polo:

The Drake girls ended Marin Catholic's four-year reign as MCAL champions with an exciting victory over MC in the championship game. After beating Tam enroute to their championship, the Pirates topped the Wildcats 9-6 at Drake.

The number two seeded Pirates, who are Drake's only MCAL Champions so far, lead throughout the game.

They then advanced to North Coast Section play, where Drake was seeded seventh and beat Marin Academy 16-6. The Pirates then fell to dominant two-seeded East Bay powerhouse Campolindo 12-8 in the Div. II quarter-finals.

Boys Water Polo:

The Drake boys, who have been dominant over the last decade and topped Marin Catholic last year, switched the girls results, falling to MC in the MCAL finals 11-2.

After their second place in MCALs, Drake advanced to North Coast Section play-offs with a number four seed. Last week, they topped Cardinal Newman 19-6 and then beat Tam 15-7 to advance to the NCS Div. II semi-finals.

Drake plays the one-seeded Alhambra at the Soda Aquatic Center tonight, Nov. 10 at 5:45 p.m. Go Pirates!

Boys Soccer:

After a disappointing season, the Pirates failed to qualify for the for the MCAL tournament, which was won by Tam. Last year, Drake - after tying Tam twice during the season - lost to the Hawks in MCAL final.

Cross-Country:

The boys and girls cross-country teams have been dominant throughout the season and are expected to contend for the MCAL championship title today. The Drake boys tied with Tam for the dual meet MCAL title, while the girls took third in the dual meet season. Two MCAL titles are awarded in cross-country; one for the dual meet season and one for the MCAL championship race.

The MCAL championship race will be run at Indian Valley in Novato this afternoon, Nov. 10, with the boys race at 3:15 p.m. and the girsl race at 4:00 p.m. The teams will then advance to the North Coast Section race in Hayward next weekend. Go Pirates!

Girls Tennis:

The Drake girls failed to qualify a team to the MCAL play-off tournament, but freshman Zoe Peltz and Maddy Smith competed in the Singles #2 division. Natalie Chapman and Jasmine Sagebiel competed in the Singles #3 division.

Girls Golf:

No Drake girls advanced to the MCAL tournament.
