Great Deed: Bodony is one of two students who will be representing the U.S. on an all-expenses paid trip to Chong Qing for a week in May.

The Fairfax student wrote a personal essay about what living a low-carbon lifestyle means to her and putting that into practice. She also made a YouTube video (which you can see at right) about low-carbon living.

The trip is sponsored by the Chong Qing Science and Technology Commission. Bodony and fellow San Domenico student, Larkspur resident Caroline Miskovsky, will spend a week touring Chong Qing - a city of 31 million - and learning about how China is implementing energy reduction goals.

Key to Awesomeness: Below is an excerpt from Anji's essay:

Food is an excellent area to reduce one’s Carbon Footprint and live more sustainably. Reusing plays a great role in the food category, for I buy things like flour, sugar, and spices in bulk and reuse glass jars to contain them. Instead of throwing away food scraps, I have started a compost pile in my backyard, which takes some waste out of the landfills and produces soil that can be used in my vegetable garden. Growing my own vegetables and herbs is sustainable, requires less money, and is better for the environment, because no fuel is being burned to transport food to our kitchen table. I can ensure that no pesticides are being used to grow them. When my family and I inevitably do have to go to the grocery store, we buy organically, reducing the amount of harmful pesticides being sprayed. We buy local products, again cutting the carbon emissions used for transporting goods long distances, and we buy foods that are in season in California, so they don’t have to be grown long distances away. When buying these products, I bring my own reusable cloth bags to the grocery store instead of taking the disposable plastic or paper ones there. This saves petroleum and reduces the amount of trees that are used in paper bags. I find food to be a particularly strong aspect of Low Carbon Living, for within that broad group is a variety of ways to live sustainably.
