Drake Boys Lose Early Showdown to San Marin

Pirates have no answer for Mustangs' powerful Stuart Wesonga as San Marin's guards handle the Drake press effectively in the MCAL basketball win.

TUESDAY'S SCORE: San Marin 63,  45

DRAKE'S RECORD: 9-6 overall, 3-1 in MCAL

GAME SUMMARY: In a matchup of the two unbeaten teams in Marin County Athletic League play thus far this season, the Drake boys basketball team suffered a 63-45 loss at San Marin on Tuesday night.

The Pirates, who trailed by only three at the half, 30-27, were outscored 15-6 in the pivotal third quarter and the Mustangs never looked back. Drake simply could not contain Stuart Wesonga, the 6-foot-7, 220-pound San Marin center, who recorded a triple-double with a game-high 24 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocked shots.

Wesonga and his Mustang teammates made it to the free throw line 25 times, converting 17, including eight by Wesonga, who is generally regarded to be the most dominant player in the league this year.

Senior led the scoring for the Pirates with 14, followed by senior , who had eight. 

Junior , fresh off his remarkable when Drake came from 20 points down to defeat Redwood, added seven for the Pirates.   

REACTION: "Going into the game, I thought we had a 50-50 shot," said Drake coach. "We tried to press their guards throughout in the hopes of creating turnovers in the backcourt, but their guys handled that pressure much better than we anticipated. And eventually, we simply ran out of gas."   

Donnellan also praised the performance of Wesonga: "He's so quick and strong and physically explosive ... he really changes the game at both ends of the floor."
