Sage's Pin Tops Drake's Day at NCS Wrestling

The junior makes the heavyweight division's final 32 thanks to his consolation-bracket win; Gazzoli runs up against powerful Luke Sheridan on a tough day.

If Dylan Sage wants to be a major player in MCAL wrestling's heavyweight division next season, he took a nice step in that direction this weekend at the North Coast Section (NCS) Championships at Newark Memorial High.

The junior pinned Arcata senior Ryan Duggan at 2:48 of the second round to record the Pirates' lone victory -- an impressive one at that -- at the annual championships.

Sage, who entered the event with just a 9-8 record, suffered a pin 36 seconds into his first match at the hands of John Swett senior James McKneeley. But he bounced back impressively in his match against Duggan in the consolation bracket, advancing to the final 32 of the heavyweight competition.

Sage's season then was ended by Castro Valley's Neil Flippin at 3:23 of the second round.

Drake 189-pounder also competed in the event, but he had the toughest draw of all, getting placed against arguably Northern California's most powerful wrestler, De La Salle's Luke Sheridan, in Round 1.

Gazzoli almost made it out of the first round of the match, but was pinned at 1:51.

He then went on to lose 8-1 to Troy Gomez of Granada to see his season end with a 19-14 record.
