Take Me Out to the Game

Ross choir sings national anthem at the Giants game.

"Oh, say, can you see..."

...the choir from St. John's singing at the Giants game?

Maybe you caught some familiar looking singers at the June 23 game, when the children and adults choirs from St. John's in Ross performed the national anthem at AT&T Park. And the local talent must have been good luck when the Giants beat the Twins.

"It was a fantastic warm day, the Giants won, and we sang well," said Music Director and Fairfax resident Lenore Alford.

Though the choir was one of the first groups in Marin to get the opportunity, there's actual a program, said Alford, to encourage community groups to perform.

The adult and children's choirs submitted a video -- of the group fully decked out in Giants gear, of course -- and (as long as they can sing the song) then receive 300 tickets at a discounted rate to sell to friends and family to raise money.

It wasn't just a fundraiser or a chance to head out to the ballgame, the performance was also a type of celebration of the first year of the new children's music program at St. John's.

Though the popular church has has a revamped adult choir since Alford became music director, the children's program -- a rarity in churches around Marin -- was only just implemented in September. The 17 kids in the program have full musical instruction, music theory classes, and sing all the hymns one Sunday mass of the month.

But, for the big day, the kids got to join with the adults to all sing for the World Series champs.

"We're going to have everybody singing together," said Alford.

Though the kids may not have known anything about musical theory or the necessary recessional hymns back in September, they were able to teach the adults a thing or two about pizzazz and enthusiasm. The group was fully decked out in pompoms, orange scarves, and practiced the choreography for weeks beforehand.

"We're going to be looking really snazzy," said Alford before the big day.
