Marin Dominates Chronicle's 'Must-See Small Towns' List

People love the small-town vibes in Marin County. What's your favorite day trip in the region?

Be prepared for an onslaught of tourists. Three Marin towns made SFGate's list of best small-town escapes published earlier this month.

Sausalito, Bolinas and Mill Valley earned kudos on the Get Lost travel blog, which highlighted cute towns within a couple hours drive of San Francisco that are worth a weekend visit.

  • Bolinas, described in the blog as "Marin County's hippie enclave on the ocean."
  • Mill Valley, especially for its annual film festival.
  • Sausalito, which also made Smithsonian magazine's list of the 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2013. The magazine touted the hydraulic model of the bay, the Victorian Lyford House at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum.

Other towns to make the list, published in the online version of the San Francisco Chronicle, included Monterey Bay gems Aptos and Carmel, coastal Half Moon Bay, wine country destinations Healdsburg and St. Helena, and Sierra foothills charmers Nevada City and Placerville.
