Volunteers Needed To Remove Plants, Help Salmon

Looking to do some volunteer work this summer? Volunteers of all ages are needed to help maintain a safe habitat in San Geronimo for the endangered coho salmon.

Volunteers are needed to remove invasive plants and help with other work at San Geronimo Creek, one of the last southern bastions of the endangered coho salmon.

A restoration event is set for Saturday, July 21, at 444 Meadow Way in San Geronimo. The AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project is teaming up with the Marin Municipal Water District, San Geronimo Planning Group Landowner Assistance program, Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN), San Geronimo Valley Stewards, and a private landowner to protect the vital habitat.

The event, “Keep the Weeds at Bay on Meadow Way,” is from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will entail an invasive plant removal followed by a native tree planting.

The first step of the event will be removing Himalayan blackberries, Scotch broom and English ivy from the creekside area. The second step will be planting native trees and shrubs in the area to shade out more invasive plants and provide canopy cover to cool the stream. This project will also help stabilize the landowner’s creekside bank, which will reduce erosion. This site is directly upstream of a very important holding pool for both coho salmon and steelhead trout.

All volunteers, of all ages, are welcome to attend. Participants should wear close-toed shoes and long pants and dress for variable weather, bring a reusable water bottle and lunch. Snacks and water will be provided.
