Positive Steps Towards Recycling

Last week Team--an alternative junior year which is part of the Tam District Union--visited Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) to learn more about our community’s waste management. What I mainly learned out of the experience, since it was my second time on the tour, was the importance of educating our community on our waste and where it goes.

When we arrived back at school, our class debriefed our experience at MSS. Many people did not understand the significant positive impact of recycling and composting on the environment.  As explained in my earlier blog, food waste releases harmful methane into the air when disposed of in the landfill. Many classmates have not started to compost their food waste (and some do not even practice basic recycling) because they have not been educated on the topic.

The good news is that Team has now started organizing our recycling and helping reduce what we put into the landfill. Once we master our recycling, we plan to create a compost! My school will make a big impact with these new systems. Imagine the impact you as community members can make too by just educating yourself and taking steps to change your waste practices.

Fun Facts

  • Marin Sanitary Service does not currently compost or recycle plant-based plastics (sometimes referred to as biodegradable or compostable - or bioplastics)

  • Landfills are the 2nd largest producer of methane in the world

  • I highly recommend going to visit Marin Sanitary Service
