A Bicycle Weekend in the Sun!

With a bike race, trail work and a fundraiser for a bike sculpture, there's something for every bicyclist this weekend.

This is a tough weekend for cyclists.

There's the Downieville Classic in the Sierra, one of the most anticipated mountain bike events of the year. On Saturday there's a cross-country bike race and on Sunday it's the downhill race! All weekend long spectators hang out downtown and jump into the Yuba River (bikes included). Last year Marin NorCal High School mountain bikers from Drake and Redwood stole the podium.

Right here in Marin there is a trail work day on the new 680 trail on Staurday. This multiuse connector trail will be open to bikers, hikers and equestrians next spring, assuming the work is complete this summer. They need volunteers to come help build the connector between the Loma Alta and Terre Linda Open Space preserves. The next chance to help is on Saturday, July 16, contact Greg Reza for details.

And, there's the San Rafael Twilight Crit in downtown San Rafael Saturday night.

On Sunday, the will be hosting the Repak BBQ, an event to raise money for a downtown sculpture recognizing Fairfax as the birthplace of the mountain bike. The event runs from 1 to 5 p.m. and includes great food and beverage, plus live music from mountain bike hall of famer Charlie Kelly. The event takes place at on Bolinas Road in Fairfax.

I think I'll stay in town and do trail work and the Repak BBQ.
