MCBC Supports Thanksgiving Route Detour

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) joins Access4Bikes, Bicycle Trails Council of Marin and Nor Cal High School Cycling League in supporting the one-day management closure of the Repack Fire Road (Cascade Fire Road) on Thanksgiving Day, to help protect sensitive habitat and steelhead trout in Cascade Canyon and throughout the Corte Madera Creek watershed.

The closure of Repack Fire Road is the only change to the traditional Appetite Seminar Thanksgiving Day ride and has the support of longtime Seminar riders Gary Fisher, Jacquie Phelan, Charlie Kelly, Otis Guy and Joe Breeze.

Marin Open Space wants bicyclists to know this decision has everything to do with the environment and is not about stopping people from having fun on their bikes. Mountain bike advocates are working closely with Marin’s land managers to expand mountain bike opportunities in the county with projects such as the 680 Trail (open to bikes in Spring 2012) and the Stafford Lake Bike Park.

If you plan to ride the Pine Mountain Loop on Thanksgiving Day, be prepared to take an alternate route off San Geronimo Ridge. Volunteers will be stationed at key locations along the route with maps that will show the other great ways to finish your ride. One option for intermediate and advanced riders is to exit through Camp Tamarancho. The Boy Scouts, in the spirit of the holiday, have waived the regular $5 day fee for use of the trails on their private property on this one day.
