More Bike Bell! Bicyclists encouraged to use bike bell on trails and pathways.

If you mountain bike, road bike or commute by bike in Marin, you no doubt have ridden on multi-use pathways and trails that we share with walkers, hikers, families and equestrians. User conflicts on trails and pathways can be avoided with a little friendly ding of a bell. The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) will be installing free bike bells on trails, paths, and bicycle gathering places across Marin County throughout the summer months.

These bells are a friendly way to signal to others that you are approaching and will go a long way in creating harmony on the trail and pathway. Two rings of a bell sounds a lot more cheerful than squealing brakes, skidding tires or yelling “on your left!”

Tom Boss, MCBC’s Off-Road & Events Director states that “Bike Bells when combined with basic trail and pathway courtesies, such as slowing down and yielding to other users, will help maintain our access to Marin’s network of pathways and trails and facilitate new opportunities.”  Bicycle advocacy organizations are experiencing success with similar bell campaigns and ultimately, the Marin County Bicycle Coalition wants everyone to enjoy their favorite trail and pathway without fear or conflict.

It takes 10 positive encounters to whip out one negative encounter. So let’s get those bells installed and start ringing them often!
