Only county-wide Earth Day festival will include top musical acts, speakers, a teen spot and a one-of-a-kind Congressional candidates environmental forum.
For years, Marin didn't have a county-wide Earth Day celebration. Smaller events took place at schools and parks throughout the county, but in 2010 Fairfax resident Hannah Doress brought the Marin-wide event to College of Marin. This year, Earth Day Marin returns and will be held at the home of the Marin County Fair: the Civic Center Lagoon Park. "We were thrilled at the response to the first Earth Day Marin Festival and plan to continue what was most popular as well as expanding," said Doress, who's again producing the event through her event management company, Hannah Doress Events. This year's festival will be held on April 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Park and will include performances, like world music act Zulu …

Local nominees will be in the hunt at the Academy Awards this Sunday.
As in typical nearly every year, several Marin residents will be among those competing in this weekend's 84th Academy Awards. While some of the biggest movie makers in Marin are well-known, the filmmaker leading the Oscar charge this Sunday is relatively unknown. Novato photographer Robin Fryday is nominated for her short documentary The Barber of Birmingham. Along with being her first Oscar nomination, it was also her first film as director. This is not the first nomination for Mill Valley resident Ren Klyce, however. Klyce was nominated for sound editing and sound mixing on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, to go with last year's nomination for sound mixing for The Social Network. Klyce has previously been nominated for sound-mixing for…
Despite proliferation of biodegradable foodware, those products aren’t being composted at the two waste management facilities in Marin. As a result, people’s choices might not be as eco-friendly as they think.
Greenwood School 8th grader Leyla Spositto and her classmates knew something was amiss just a few weeks into the school year when they saw the trash piling up. Greenwood administrators had chosen San Ramon, Calif.-based Choicelunch as the school’s new lunch provider largely because nearly all of its packaging was made of compostable materials – from corn-based bio-plastic cups to potato-based “spudware” forks and spoons – and therefore would be diverted from the landfill. The move fit with one of the school’s core values of environmental stewardship. But when Greenwood environmental science teacher Julie Hanft told the students that so-called bio-plastics weren’t being composted in Marin, Greenwood’s 7th and 8th graders, who handle the …

As Ski Week kicks off, fewer Marinites are headed to the snowless Tahoe than usual. Have you been to Tahoe this year?
At The Jolly Roger Corner, you get a glimpse into Drake's oldest high school newspaper The Jolly Roger. These stories are written by Drake students, published in the Jolly Roger, and republished here with permission. Check out more articles, photos, reviews and insight into our local school at drakejr.com. As Drake's Ski Week starts, the Jolly Roger looks at the ghost town that has been Tahoe so far this year. Are you heading there this week? Is it getting livelier? BY LINCOLN RICHARDS As you drive around the corner of Highway 89, the usually-bustling hub of the north shore, Tahoe City, is little more than a ghost town. The snow that usually coats the town is nowhere to be seen. If you have driven through Tahoe City this winter, you have…
Lots going on in our Ross Valley this week.
Good Traffic for Good Earth The new Good Earth store has been packed since it opened and there is no end in sight for the hugely successful new location. Big, clean, crisp, fantastic -- these are the words this writer is hearing about the new digs, and from what I’ve seen from the outside (and the great Patch video!) it is clearly a hit with more than a few. I keep saying I’ll wait until the crowds disperse to hit the aisles, but that isn’t happening any time soon. Congratulations on a job really well done! Any business that moves in across the street can’t help but do well with all of the new traffic, and the soon-to-be Avatar restaurant will surely be among those. Wonder what will happen to the now vacant (but likely not for long) old …
