Please consider with sensitivity, your use of words. "Murderer" is a frightening andRead More inflammatory word at this time. Other words can easily describe a gardener's ineptness with plants.

Avatar's? No offense but that place is empty and does not have the punch of its sister spots. AgreeRead More on Sushi 69 - a real gem (but pricey). Good Earth is very good for Thai FYI - very fresh. Indian on sfd next to liquor store in fairfax rocks, try the chicken machni. Trust me. Beer good at iron springs and L'Appert is very good (not cheap - go on music night). Mi Familia delivers on tacqueria grease but Mi Puebla is good too. I wish Casa Mañana lived up to San Rafael standard. What else? Oh, yeah, Yelp sucks. Support local restaurants!
Kelly O'Mara April 4, 2013 at 03:24 am
Word on Sushi 69.
Bob Hunter April 3, 2013 at 02:09 pm
Russ, Yelp's ratings simply stirred my thoughts on how much our restaurants and retailers couldRead More benefit from a more robust online presence. I have no dog in this race other than to help our local businesses do more business. Bob

All four should be commended for essentially volunteering. Our town council really needs some newRead More blood. There's a lot more the town can do to move flood mitigation along and our downtown business community needs the help of council members who can think outside the box when it comes to attracting and supporting new business. How about a business incubator mentality?
Scott Alonso April 1, 2013 at 04:39 pm
Agreed Steve would make an excellent councilmember. Thanks for the ongoing coverage Jessica!

Bed bugs have been turning up in movie theaters, libraries and cafes forever. Expect this toRead More continue. The best thing people can do is learn what they look like and implement an ongoing monitoring system at home, to catch problems early.
Tim Maloney April 27, 2013 at 03:54 pm

Seems pretty obvious Frank Dean and his core management team consider GGNRA public land to be theirRead More own backyard, where they can pick and choose which parts of GGNRA charter they want to follow, and ignore the rest. Their continuous attempts to impose radical, "zero-impact" NPS regs in GGNRA areas is clear demonstration of how completely out of control this management group has become. Dean continues to cost US taxpayers $Ms in litigation costs to defend policies like this in court, which either clearly overstep NPS (and GGNRA's) authority, or are based on misguided interpretations of NPS (and GGNRA) charter(s). These people are either grossly incompetent or willfully ignore the checks and balances designed to prevent the sort of abuses of power that they routinely demonstrate. How is it nothing can be done about this? Doesn't anyone in DC supervise this group? Anyone else "managing" a group like this and exposing US taxpayers to $Ms in litigation costs would have been fired years ago.

It is not just that seeing bodies is not harmful. The attitudes encouraged by seeing them areRead More positively beneficial. Ever wondered why the USA has ten times the teenage pregnancy rate of Denmark? Actually the pattern is similar for all the body-shame, body-ignorance, and body-image related indicators. More prudish countries have worse outcomes, often enormously worse. The correlations are near perfect and the reasons well understood but their is incredible reluctance to set aside prejudice and to set policy according to the facts. Our children deserve far better and the FCC are to be congratulated on taking a step in the right direction, although rather a small one.
Sierra Salin April 17, 2013 at 03:26 pm
Hey, Holy F! A naked body. We AL know what it says, however we abbreviate or shout it out in fool.Read More It IS one of the most versatle and used words in existence, as a noun, verb, adverb, and every other label of speech, and most of us use it. You can use it entirely, for every word in a sentence, as in, F'n F F'd F'r F F F F and we all know all of the meanings. What DO you say when something goes terribly, wrong, falls over, breaks, is incredibly awesome, etc? Kids, aside from toddlers, already know the words, and they learn it all from us anyway, regardless of what we may profess, in our everyday excremations. I'll never understand the big prudish hoohaa over nudity or bodies. We all have them, so what, and get over it. Clothes keep me warm and protect my ass and everything else from poison oak, sunburn, and road rash, and are functional, beyond what they do or don't look like, or style. It's not what you have, or don't have, or what you do or don't look like, but what you do with it, in intent, and action, which is more important. Substance is always more important than appearances.

Tina McMillan April 13, 2013 at 02:10 pm
Ryan Did you read the links? The decision to close the farm was not based on being a "bigRead More polluting oyster farm" or any science for that matter, but simply because Salazar could choose to end the lease and so he did. The adjective "Big" should be attached to the word "Government" in the case of the Oyster Farms closure. There is no doubt that Big Government flexed its muscle and simply said we can therefore we will. Read the two links to see what was said. One is the NYTimes and the other a West Marin resident. "In the end, after all the money spent on the science — on cameras whose images were not carefully examined, on reports that misrepresented scientific studies, and on repeated investigations of flawed scientific work — the Interior Department’s decision not to renew an oyster company’s lease to operate within Point Reyes National Seashore largely sidestepped any scientific issues." "The federal government spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on studies aimed at making a clear scientific case against the farm’s continued operation and on various critiques of the self-same science." "Beyond that, flaws identified in the science may also have cost the National Park Service, particularly the Point Reyes scientists and their defenders, a substantial loss of professional credibility. One might ask if the studies would have been deemed more relevant if they had conclusively found that the oyster farm caused serious environmental harm."
Craig Belfor April 13, 2013 at 02:04 pm
1) Oysters are filters, so they clean up the water. 2) The Lunnys paid rent, employed people,Read More supplied a wanted product, and were under intense scrutiny from opponents at all times. 3) If we must follow the letter of the law, we must not only vacate the oyster farm, but must all book a flight back to Europe. If the Indians had a coastal commission, we would be the invasive species. We kill coyotes, bears, mountain lions, sharks, mosquitos, and anything else that's inconvenient to our lifestyle, but cry foul over a natural filter that cleans up our mess. Wanna get rid of an invasive species? Close Wyndover.

Ford is being an elected bully for his own purpose. The rules are plain and he would have no problemRead More enforcing vacation of a non-conforming or illegal unit against any San Anselmo resident NOT on the town council. Election to office does not confer immunity to rules.
Bob Hunter April 9, 2013 at 09:28 pm
Ford could have the presence of mind to see that he does not have the right to any specialRead More treatment, especially after his abuse of town staff, but he doesn't. He could have the presence of mind to see that his time could be focused on town business, not creating more work for the town staff, but he doesn't. I am not the only San Anselmo resident who believes he should resign his position on the town council.
William Bertram April 5, 2013 at 12:10 am
Bob, I am very curious about your thoughts on what "Healthy Business environments" lookRead More like exactly...
Bob Hunter April 4, 2013 at 01:16 pm
William, I concur that our towns will need to find leadership that understands the importance ofRead More local jobs, which spring from healthy business environments. Bob
William Bertram April 4, 2013 at 06:32 am
I support your enthusiasm for the potential of these 2 towns to become the new Mecca, orRead More "Incubator" for start-ups. But like many who do and ARE successful, they tend to leave the area for more 'Business friendly' areas. Fairfax and San Anselmo are NOT in that category, having co-managed a business there for over 25 years. I have also know countless other former AND current business owners who have little good to say about certain arbitrary decisions made against business' that were painfully anti-growth. Greener pastures than these 2 municipalities ABOUND elsewhere when the money starts rolling in, and I for one, would leave too under current policies.
Pam Hartwell-Herrero April 5, 2013 at 05:59 pm
This article is in reference to a county wide sales tax, not just Fairfax. At no point in time didRead More the project for Terrapin come in front of any town entity for approval. Fairfax businesses have rebounded from the recession better than most communities and we have hardly any empty store fronts. There is nothing prevent ing local businesses from thriving. On the contrary we have more initiatives to encourage local shopping than any other community in Marin.
John Ferguson April 4, 2013 at 03:39 pm
If local merchants want to compete with online vendors for sales, they have to know on what basisRead More they are competing (and can compete on). First, know your customer. I highly doubt that there are customers of online retailers who will be persuaded by local taxes to go to a physical store for the same purchase. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the profiles of heavy online shoppers break down pretty cleanly along the lines of gender, age and income. Who likes to shop in stores? Predominantly female and a bit older. Is that why we have so many wine bars in Fairfax/San Anselmo? If you're a retailer with a store, you can't compete on price. You simply can't. Not for anything. You have to compete on service, and hopefully in a category not much represented online. Better still if you can offer products that are unique enough to command a premium over commodity comparables. But it really comes down to service, especially in categories targeting primarily women. Amazon has figured out their model - you will not be able to compete with them long term for shippable commodity goods. Don't even think about trying..
Bob Hunter April 4, 2013 at 01:32 pm
William, Best Buy is well known as Amazon's showroom. There are many products that are much moreRead More efficient to buy after a test drive. Online sales will grow and grow, I agree. That growth rate will slow at some point, possibly partially as a result of local merchants finding ways to compete.

I don't feel safe or comfortable in San Rafael - even during the day... the tipping point willRead More destroy the real estate values near downtown... Something needs to be done.
Cathy Borg April 2, 2013 at 09:37 pm
It seems to me that the message "don't go here" would only increase the likelihood for theRead More homeless to meet up with others in a similar situation, thereby increasing the spot's hotness. More importantly, if the homeless "don't go here," where should they go instead? Where should they go to pee, sleep, store their stuff, etc.? Most likely another part of the city/county where will then create a new hot spot. Without providing them with viable alternatives, the problem doesn't get any better, it only gets shuffled around.
Bren April 22, 2013 at 04:13 pm

Banning the sale in a free market economy is too strong. I believe people should be able to chooseRead More so long as the product is labeled correctly, and even placed in a section with a big sign that says "GM Food products". Would I buy it if I pass the section at the grocery store: NO.
