Sure was a fun morning! Thanks to FFD station 21 and the Fairfax police crew who guided us safelyRead More up the river this morning..

In the 3rd grade, I had a teacher who threw erasers at our heads. When she was extra spicy, she'dRead More walk across our desks whilst ranting her diatribe of the day. QUITE memorable to say the least. Nothing gave me more pleasure than testifying in court to get this battler fired. Thanks Teach, for the good lessons!

Back in first grade in catholic school, Sister Mary Hadalittalam (or whatever) explained to us oneRead More day that our pupils were black because the inside of our eyes are hollow. So hollow, in fact, that you could poke pins into your eyes and not hurt yourself. Dangerous nunsense such as this taught me that even the most profoundly sick and twisted people could be found in positions of authority.

Can the Patch get any more idiotic?

OK, so we know the railing is not just to keep people from stepping on the plants. "Look beforeRead More you leap." comes to mind. Still half of the pedestrians fail, "look both ways BEFORE crossing the street. I would rate this story closer to the thrill seeking teen that jumped off the GG bridge, though he knew there was a big drop. The blow hole incident was more of a misjudgment of the power of waves. We read about someone being swept off our beaches often. That one was extra sad.

It would be nice to have an updated field for when stories are modified. That photo really changesRead More the story.

GREAT idea and initiative on your part, kids. It's too long and has sound problems. People areRead More flooded with videos for good causes; it needs work to stand out. I'm SURE you can get some local editing and/or funds donated to pare this video down and punch it up. Keep going!

86% overhead on salaries and benefits? Yeah, I'd ask for transparency as well! Best of luck St.Read More Rita's students, parents and staff.

I think one number stands out for me, and I know that St rita's is a great school, and the parentsRead More and students are a very connected community, and I would not liketo see it close, but with 133 students at a budget of 1.3 million that's close to $10,000 per student. Is it reasonable to compare these numers to other schools in the area? (I haven't seen the figures for the other schools so thats why I'm asking).... and i understand the benefits of a smaller private/catholic school vs larger public education, so that isn't really the comparison I'm thinking of, but the numbers would good to know just for comparison.

Good news for foes of the catholic church.
John Ferguson March 1, 2013 at 03:56 pm
I have a child in the Ross Valley public schools and I never considered St. Rita's. I canRead More understand that the economics that allow parochial schools to thrive elsewhere might not apply in Fairfax, at least not any longer. I wonder if the Catholic church's recently publicized issues with covering up pedophilia has anything to do with declining enrollment. Being painted with that brush, no matter how unfair, can't be good for enrollment prospects.

Anyone have bicycle or locked property stolen in Terra Linda last Wednesday? I found a cut cableRead More lock just off the sidewalk. Really odd side it was next to the sidewalk and not tossed into the bushes. I figured who ever was that lazy might have left finger prints. If the prints belong to a felon, go check their house for stolen property. I called the police, but they never picked it up. FYI: The SRPD said a lot of bicycles are getting stolen.

Sometimes the good guys win. I never saw any of my bicycles again.

A very good friend of mine had her locked bike stolen in Oakland. A very nice Specialized. Not tooRead More much help from the police, so she scoured CraigsList daily and saw an ad for her bike posted. She contacted the police and together they set up a sting and met the seller, police arrested him - - and she got her bike back. Sometimes the good "guy" wins.

These guys were brazen! The bike was locked (with a really thin cable, unfortunately) right in frontRead More of our studio. Door was open and we were 30' away! Gave chase, but they slipped away. Looks like they have raised plenty to replace it on indiegogo. Pelo sponsors SRHS Dawgs Mountain Biking and the NORCAL league with special classes and discounts. www.pelofitness.com

I've put the word out to my bay area friends to keep their eyes open for this bike. Has he doneRead More anything to personalize it in any way that would make it recognizable? Mirrors, or anything added, stickers, decals, that would say it's his...how could anyone tell it was his if they saw someone riding it around? Put it out on your facebook pages, pictures of him and his bike...anything that would help find it. ( It would be nice to find it and have another as a spare--and to catch the thieves would be a special bonus!)

Will they be discussing home drug testing at the event? Teen addicts in treatment tellRead More myteensavers parent involvement like this event and home drug testing can prevent teen abuse. Here is another article about UC coaches salaries.Read More http://www.ocregister.com/articles/coaches-316441-nobel-laureates.html "The top UC coaches earn, on average, three times more than the system’s full-time Nobel laureates. The top eight coaches earned an average of $1.2 million in 2010, while UC’s eight full-time laureates earned an average of $403,000." http://www.dickmeister.com/id117.html "Hard times continue at the University of California - except, of course, for UC's very well cared for administrators. Their six-figure salaries continue to grow handsomely while the pay of those who teach and do most of the university's other work remains stagnant, and even as student tuition and fees increase and qualified students are being turned away." I am not sure when government jobs began earning at the same level as private industry jobs. The difference in pay use to be justified by the better retirement and benefit package. Now it seems they get a private industry salary and all the other perks that go with a tax payer subsidized job. At the very bottom of the pyramid are the students. If we can't cut back salaries to increase classes and give students what they need then our system is failing.

Novato Native It is so frustrating to see kids work their tails off and then not have a clear trackRead More to a degree because too much money is going to top tier staff in the UC system. Here is a link to an article by the teachers union. http://www.cft.org/universities/394-uc-budget-qa.html "Possible Salary Reductions" "Q: Is it true that we are going to have our salaries reduced? A: It is very possible that the UC may decide to cut all salaries 5% or use a furlough system to accomplish the same thing. However, in the case of lecturers and librarians, the university has to negotiate any salary reduction. Q: If the UC is broke, why would the union resist a 5% salary reduction? A: We do not think the university is broke, and we want them to prove to us that they need to make these cuts. Q: Why do you think they are not broke? A: The university brings in billions of dollars every year in profits from medical services, extension programs, parking, housing, research, patents, and fund raising. They are just trying to maintain a high level of disposable income, while they claim they are poor. (see http://universityprobe.org/2009/04/budget-lies-a-letter-to-the-president-of-uc/)" I don't know who is telling the truth and who is lying I just know that kids that are a hairs breath away from a degree can no longer get classes in impacted schools. I thought the JC path was a way to insure success but it looks like that is broken too.

College costs have doubled - as has the cost of food and rent. And COM has cut many of the classesRead More needed to graduate. What did they expect? Meanwhile, the costs of the new buildings are still climbing and not completed. Teachers moral is at an all time low. The PE bathrooms are not properly cleaned- the pool is often filthy with bandages at the bottom and a ring around the edge. Santa Rosa JC is so much more together, better classes and more of them. It is not the fault of the few good tenured teachers they have left. The rest of the part-time teachers struggle to make ends meet as they are kept from being tenured so that they have a full schedule and a payscale that allows them time to concentrate on teaching. What mismanagement.
