It's a good day to visualize a Bay Area commute made up of walking paths, bike lanes, ferries,Read More buses, and rail. Someday people will wonder why past generations tortured themselves in cars.

After 10 years of bike commuting to work and college, I will RUN to work on Thursday.... Good luckRead More out there folks, don't forget your helmets and water!

John I dove for years from Portuguese Beach to Elk and every cove in between. It's a sport, it'sRead More beautiful and indefinably more then a bit of seafood. Ab diving isn't selfish it's shellfish!

With air the Abalone would be gone! Picked clean in a matter of a few seasons. Bad enough poachersRead More take more then the legal limit for black market profit. If you pay attention and don't dive alone the drive on the coastal roads is more dangerous then the dive.
Will Lamers April 30, 2013 at 01:04 pm
Because with an air supply a diver can simply clear the rocks of all the abalone. All abalone haveRead More to be taken by free diving...

Cate, hope you did not have any friends or family directly affected by the bombing.

You really captured the moment. Beautiful writing.

I' m "so wicked pissed" along with you, Cate. Thanks for your personal and sympatheticRead More description of the attitudes and actions of your Boston community. Riding the Green Line past Copley will from now on give way to a silent moment or two.

There ARE good folks in this world. We create and recreate our world, with every waking $ spent,Read More invested, and freely given toward good things.

After living on the east coast for the last 25+ years, I am still a huge Niner fan and believe me,Read More it still "stings", just ask my wife, (a converted Redskins fan !) Enjoyed the article Tim

Donated and feeling good about it... it's a really hard to have something important stolen fromRead More you, hopefully you are feeling better after the community support you've gotten from people donating time and efforts for you... all the best in your biking!

These guys were brazen! The bike was locked (with a really thin cable, unfortunately) right in frontRead More of our studio. Door was open and we were 30' away! Gave chase, but they slipped away. Looks like they have raised plenty to replace it on indiegogo. Pelo sponsors SRHS Dawgs Mountain Biking and the NORCAL league with special classes and discounts. www.pelofitness.com

I've put the word out to my bay area friends to keep their eyes open for this bike. Has he doneRead More anything to personalize it in any way that would make it recognizable? Mirrors, or anything added, stickers, decals, that would say it's his...how could anyone tell it was his if they saw someone riding it around? Put it out on your facebook pages, pictures of him and his bike...anything that would help find it. ( It would be nice to find it and have another as a spare--and to catch the thieves would be a special bonus!)

"Daughter with lots of money" might make a good byline. I have zero respect for any LucasRead More relative, bio or not. But that is just me, who did not see any of his movies, by choice. Better to leave her adoptive parent out of it. You only ran the story because of the fame link. Right? Why not show a picture of her, she must be better looking.
M. Kathryn Thompson February 14, 2013 at 03:14 pm
Adoption is not part of the story, would you mention "daughter by birth", how you became aRead More family is irrelevent to her accomplishments.
Alex Horvath February 9, 2013 at 12:48 pm
I wonder if the being adopted quotient has any part in the documentary? While Amanda undoubtedlyRead More landed in a good home, a lot of people that were adopted struggle with this.

I spend a lot of time solo on primitive trails in winter. I appreciate the honest account, with nodRead More to his rescuers. But "jeans" and a "sweatshirt" on a winter run? I really hope these weren't cotton. 41 years of running in Marin should really prepare someone for the elements more than this. No light??? If I head out late, I would tend to avoid unknown terrain, esp. that which might include extremely steep drainages. I ALWAYS bring a light in winter, and enough clothes so that I could survive an injury if delayed. It is the responsibility of trail users to know the area and prepare for seasonal conditions and terrain. Oh BTW, I am originally from the East Coast, and quickly learned to respect the West Coast wilderness and all its unpredictable aspects. In my earlier zeal & ignorance I have had similar episodes -which could have required rescue. I typically prefer rough, primitive terrain, and often hike/bike alone. I try to be prepared, but still enjoy a challenge, with a manageable degree of risk. (former rock climber, mountaineer). But of course if things had gone as planned, we would not have enjoyed the well penned cautionary tale above. Happy trails!

Wow. I guess you've never made a mistake in your life. Wishing death on someone is pretty harsh.
JNL January 31, 2013 at 05:15 pm
Fred and other folks here bring up very good points about preparedness. Seems if it took Mr. KleinRead More 1:20 to run to the stream, after determining he could not cross safely, he could have turned around and run/walked back to his car. Since it was dark, if he had brought a headlamp or flashlight, he could have retraced his steps and gotten back to his car safely. Perhaps not in the 1:20 time it took to get to the stream as he was tired and it was uphill back to the car. He could have then called his family to say he would be late. But by turning around he would not have required a rescue. Having a light can make all the difference. Doesn't wear down the cell phone battery either.

All great memeories by everyone thus far. My family is in it's 64th consecutive year aa a seasonRead More tix holder and we were fortunate to have attended three. In New Orleans in 1990 the restaurants were so crowded, you had to share tables and we were lucky to sit with Denver fans the day before for lunch and dinner. All they could say was how everybody in Denver knew they were going to lose and that they were just happy to be there. Final score: 55-10.

No one has been "barred from entry" to Cooperstown. Players remain on the ballot for 15Read More years. I agree with John Ferguson, this will pass before the big names' eligibility does. When you have an ego the size of Barry Bonds and all the money in the world, this in fact might be the only "punishment" that actually matters. If I were a baseball writer I would certainly not elect any of these guys on the first ballot.
John Ferguson January 9, 2013 at 11:18 pm
This from the BBWAA website - Rule 5 concerning what the writers should consider while voting:Read More 'Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.' I understand that voters have issues with steroid users when regarding their integrity, sportsmanship and character but let's get real. Ty Cobb is in the hall and he had well documented sportsmanship and character issues that dwarf any that Bonds and Clemens could ever lay claim to. Gaylord Perry is in the hall despite being a well known cheat who wrote a book on the subject. Orlando Cepeda is in the hall despite being jailed for 10 months for trafficking marijuana. The list goes on and on. Steroids enhanced performance, but so did amphetamines which were widely used in the 60s and 70s. My take - this will all pass before this current crop is denied entrance to the hall. I just feel bad for the guys whose window for entry is coming to a close and who are otherwise pretty deserving, like Tim Raines. They'll be the ones to be locked out unfairly.
Alisha Oloughlin January 9, 2013 at 11:00 pm
I'm so glad you to hear that he made it out safely. As was stated above, accidents happen sometimes-Read More despite the precautions that we may take. Mr. Klein was very wise to have brought his cell phone with him on his routine run. Many would not think to do so. Well done and much appreciation to the search and rescue crews.
Active Thinker January 3, 2013 at 04:10 pm
He was adventuring out in the wild and got lost...it happens to alot of people...it's calledRead More exploring. That's why we have search and rescue teams. They do it because stuff happens. Life moves on and someone was saved. so Anita bath...I ask you what have you done in your life that is all perfect? This might be one of those times...just saying.
Sierra Salin January 2, 2013 at 02:42 pm
Wait until it happens to you Anita, just wait, although, perhaps, you only venture out in an suv toRead More the safety of the mall, and believe in staying home to watch Fox? Stuff happens, and things break, and there must not have been decent access out or he would have climbed out? All it takes is a second of inattention, or a slippery spot..... Oops.

I love the fact that the lakes are being stocked and I think it should be more often. There used toRead More be 2 pair of Osprey fishing Bon Tempe, they are gone now, the Lake was fished out by people, cormorants, seagulls and ducks. It used to be stocked regularly to everythings benefit. My one problem with people fishing is the fishing litter they leave, not paper or trash it's the fishing line, hooks, hooks attached to line and strung in trees, shrubs or just left on the shore in a tangled dangerous mess. I would love to see the MMWD put up signs that say 'Leave It Like You Found It' I think people can understand that, then animals don't have to be injured by the love of fishing.
