Hundreds of people have gathered outside San Quentin State Prison Monday afternoon for a protest that organizers are calling historic because they say it merges the Occupy and prisoners' rights movements. Between 600 and 700 demonstrators were protesting peacefully outside the prison's East Gate as of 3 p.m., according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The protest began at noon and was scheduled to continue until late Monday afternoon. A prison spokesman said San Quentin is on lockdown and that prisoners are being kept in their cells. Organizer Barbara Becnel said the protesters are calling for a number of reforms, including the elimination of solitary confinement, the death penalty and California's "three strikes" law, and an end to…

Police say 27-year-old former employee tripped a burglar alarm and was caught by video surveillance cameras Friday night at San Anselmo Ave. eyewear shop.
A 27-year-old man suspected of robbing an eyewear store he used to work at in San Anselmo was arrested by police Friday night, according to the Police Department. At about 7 p.m., officers responded to a tripped burglar alarm at Sunglass City, located at 623 San Anselmo Ave., where the burglar had forced entry to the business, activating the alarm. Upon assessing the aftermath, store representatives determined that the burglar had made off with an undisclosed amount of money. Video surveillance footage led police to arrest Nicolas Pierre Josephs, of San Anselmo, on suspicion of burglary. Josephs was identified by Sunglass City representatives as a former employee of the store, according to Cpl. Sethi Jervan. Josephs was taken into custody …

Marin County Superior Court Judge Andrew Sweet on Wednesday approved accused serial killer Joseph Naso's waiver of his right to an attorney, clearing the way for the 78-year-old Reno man to represent himself in his trial for four Northern California murders that occurred between 1977 and 1994. Judge said he found Naso mentally capable, literate and fully informed, and therefore able to continue acting as his own attorney. Naso has been representing himself since his arrest on April 11 in South Lake Tahoe. After again informing Naso of the advantages of having an attorney and the pitfalls of representing himself, Sweet asked Naso if he still wanted to waive his right to have an attorney.
