In Marin, Many Compostable Materials Go Straight to Landfill

Despite proliferation of biodegradable foodware, those products aren’t being composted at the two waste management facilities in Marin. As a result, people’s choices might not be as eco-friendly as they think.

Greenwood School 8th grader Leyla Spositto and her classmates knew something was amiss just a few weeks into the school year when they saw the trash piling up. Greenwood administrators had chosen San Ramon, Calif.-based Choicelunch as the school’s new lunch provider largely because nearly all of its packaging was made of compostable materials – from corn-based bio-plastic cups to potato-based “spudware” forks and spoons – and therefore would be diverted from the landfill. The move fit with one of the school’s core values of environmental stewardship. But when Greenwood environmental science teacher Julie Hanft told the students that so-called bio-plastics weren’t being composted in Marin, Greenwood’s 7th and 8th graders, who handle the …

I couldn't agree more on digging deeper, especially when we're talking about engaging student curiosity. I take issue with the implication that compostable bioware use is a greenwashing technique meant to mislead consumers. That is not always the case. When Choicelunch first started exploring biowares in 2006, we did so with the understanding that commercial composting that could break down these…   more ›

Check out more articles, photos, reviews and insight into our local school at drakejr.com. As Drake's Ski Week starts, the Jolly Roger looks at the ghost town that has been Tahoe so far this year. Are you heading there this week? Is it getting livelier? BY LINCOLN RICHARDS As you drive around the corner of Highway 89, the usually-bustling hub of the north shore, Tahoe City, is little more than a ghost town. The snow that usually coats the town is nowhere to be seen. If you have driven through Tahoe City this winter, you have…

Ross Valley Robots

White Hill and San Domenico students know their robots.

Ross Valley students know a thing or two about robots. The San Domenico robotics squad took top honors took top honors in the Northern California FIRST Tech Challenge Regional tournament in Lincoln, Calif., the last weekend of January. The three White Hill robotics teams also headed to the First Lego League championships in Rocklin last weekend and brought home their highest scores yet. Coach Nate MacDonald was also awarded Outstanding Coach of the Year. “The kids gave us all reason to be proud,” said MacDonald. “They spent three lunch hours each week and many Saturdays preparing for this challenge and their hard work paid off!” According to The Ross Valley Reporter, the San Domenico team recovered from an earlier disqualification to …

Drake Qualifies Its First Wrestler to State Tournament

The girls squad shows the way for their male teammates.

It was the girls turn to shine at last weekend's NCS wrestling meet. During the MCAL season wrestling is co-ed, but when it's time to move into the post-season the genders are split up. This meant that while the boys will be heading to Marin Catholic this weekend for the MCAL Championships, the Drake girls moved out of MCALs based on their season record and got a shot at North Coast Section competition in the East Bay this past weekend. The Drake girls wrestling squad continued it's strong showing, bringing five girls to the tournament -- the most of any of the Marin squads -- and qualifying their first wrestler (male or female) to the state tournament in years. Senior Alanna Hamilton took fourth at 146 lbs., sending her to the state …

Schools Likely to Ask Voters for Tax Renewal

District considering putting parcel tax extension on June ballot.

The Ross Valley School District will likely ask the voters in June to renew a $309 per parcel tax that raises $2.3 million per year for the district – money it says it desperately needs. “We have excellent schools, great teachers, amazing parents,” said Superintendent Eileen Rohan. “It’s important that the community supports education.” If Governor Brown’s tax ballot measures don’t pass in November, the district will lose $800,000, said RVSD Business Manager Jim Cerreta. Because the vote on those measures will come in the school year, the district would have to dip into its reserves – leaving a structural deficit of over $1 million. “If [the parcel tax] is not renewed,” said Cerreta, “we have another $2.3 million to cut” – out of an $18 …

College of Marin Could Lose Accreditation

COM faces sanctions if it doesn't meet meet list of demands.

College years are supposed to be fun, but they're getting a lot harder for students — and, it turns out, for college administrators. College of Marin, already squeezed by a diminishing budget, is facing a threat to its standing as an educational institution. In a letter received by the College of Marin President/Superintendent's Office on Feb. 6, Dr. Barbara Beno, president of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges, issued a warning sanction to the college. If the college were to lose its accreditation, it would likely lose out on state and federal funding. Students looking to transfer would be placed in a bind, as their class credits might not be accepted by many four-year …

Video of New Manor Building Going Up

New modular went up this week.

With Measure A bond construction to address overcrowding in the Ross Valley School District finally getting underway, Manor was the first to break ground this week. The above time-lapsed video shows the new modular classroom being installed at Manor School on Wednesday morning. The modular is one of three classrooms being added to Manor, but it was approved to go in earlier than originally scheduled because enrollment exceeded expectations this year. The district also opted to go with the modular building instead of custom-built in order to get it in faster. It should be in use after the President's Day holiday week. Watch of tour of the Manor facilities. The rest of the construction at the elementary schools will come second after work at…
