Weekend Routine: Kay Coleman Frequents Comforts, Cooks With The Grandsons

San Anselmo's vice mayor shares her weekend traditions with Patch readers.

When San Anselmo’s Vice Mayor was elected to the San Anselmo Town Council in November 2009, she arrived at the dais after spending more than 10 years as the San Anselmo community resources director. While working for the town, she raised funds for the downtown beautification project and coordinated volunteer activities, festivals and “fun times,” she said. A teacher by trade, Coleman has taught English, Spanish and French at, Terra Linda High School and San Rafael High School.

Coleman’s weekends always involve spending time with her “three and half” grandsons (the “half” accounts for a boy due in July). “I love to have them over to swim and eat. We all love to eat and we all love to cook.” Her oldest grandson is 20 years old and the others are a 3-year-old and the 2-year-old Padon, who encourages Coleman and her husband, Carter, to always have an ample supply of blueberries and strawberries. “He comes in and opens the refrigerator,” Coleman said.

A ‘Comfort’ing tradition

Before church on Sundays, Coleman stops at for some Earl Grey tea and a cinnamon role. Coleman, a longtime San Anselmo resident, spends a lot of time downtown visiting with the town’s well-established residents as well as the newer, and younger, families with small children. She can always be spotted at …

…Picnics on the Plaza

Coleman started with San Anselmo Community Services Director  three years ago. The free weekly family event on Friday evenings July 20 through August 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., features live music and themed nights. This year it will include a “Hawaiian” night and a “Latin” night, Coleman said. It’s at San Anselmo Town Hall, 525 San Anselmo Avenue.

Oysters, San Francisco and time the garden

Other weekend favorites include Coleman and Carter driving to The Marshall Store on Tomales Bay to eat oysters, visiting friends in the city, working in the garden and spending time on the computer.
