Street Smarts

The Street Smarts campaign, intended to raise drivers, bikers and pedestrians safety awareness, is complete for this fall. The signs are being removed and will be reused for the campaign at a future date. Many thanks to all who heeded the signs, and those who agreed to have them placed on their property.

Emergency Telephone Notification System

The town participates in the county’s emergency telephone notification system.  There are two separate systems in place:

  • The first is called TENS, and it can automatically contact all residents and businesses in a defined area on their land line phone, through the 9-1-1 system.
  • The second is called MEANS, and it is intended for two groups: 1) business owners who may need to be contacted after hours via cell or home phone and 2) residents who do not have a land line.

Here is more information on both systems:

TENS (Telephone Emergency Notification System) is an automated telephone notification system that works automatically through the 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone database. It is used to deliver pre-recorded messages to residences or businesses in specific areas depending on the nature of the emergency. You do NOT need to sign up for this notification system unless you do not have a landline telephone. If you do not have a landline telephone at your home, then you should sign up for MEANS.

MEANS, the Marin Emergency Automated Notification System, is an automated telephone notification system that makes phone calls automatically through a database built by the Town. It is used to deliver pre-recorded messages to business owners in specific areas of town, depending on the nature of the emergency.

Businesses MUST SIGN UP FOR THIS notification system.

If you are a merchant, you can add or change a MEANS and/or emergency contact phone number by updating your emergency contact information with the Department. You can download the form at:

http://www.townofsananselmo.org/documents/Police/Business%20Emergency%20_%20Alarm_rev%201007.PDF .

If you are a Town resident who does not have a landline telephone send us an email to chief@sananselmopd.org with the word MEANS in the subject line. Include your name, address and the phone number you wish receive emergency notification messages. You will receive an email reply letting you know that the information has been entered in the MEANS database.

As a reminder, if you are a resident and you have a landline phone in your residence, you do not need to sign up for MEANS.

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
